Monthly Update

June 2020

Black Lives Matter. These past weeks have sparked many conversations in our organization about our values and living these values through our actions. As community leaders in innovation, we have a platform, and a duty to our Members, employees, and all Canadians to be more than bystanders.

The Digital Supercluster was founded on values of diversity and respect. We stand united against the enduring racism and violence directed at individuals because of their ethnicity, culture, or faith. We are dedicated to listening, educating ourselves and being active allies in this movement. We are committed to learning about, confronting, and addressing generational ideologies and systemic biases, and becoming thoughtful and informed supporters of actions to build a Canada where equality, dignity, and respect is both shared and experienced by all.

We recently became signatories of the Business Council of British Columbia’s Stand Against Racism pledge —a commitment by organizations from across BC to stop racism. Please join us in this pledge. If you have any ideas on how we can further take action we want to hear from you.

Looking Ahead

COVID-19 has both allowed and required all Canadians to re-imagine our future communities, society and economies. In our Supercluster, and for many of our Members, this means accelerating the development, deployment and scaling of digital solutions to rebuild and grow our economy in many ways, including becoming global leaders in: the digital transformation of health systems, the education and training of citizens and in creating a sustainable environment for generations to come.

As Canada beings to re-open and rebuild our economy, we are excited and proud to see the progress of projects across our entire portfolio and the rapid growth and impact of our COVID-19 program. We are redoubling our commitment to support our Members and organizations across the country in contributing to Canada’s plans for economic recovery. The past few months have been tremendously difficult in many ways and yet, through this we have seen the determination, ingenuity and resilience of Canadian innovators. The energy and thoughtfulness that our Members have brought to the current environment has demonstrated what we can do when we focus on outcomes and work together – something that across the Supercluster we are determined to take forward and expand in future projects and initiatives. This is a special time for Canadian innovators – with opportunities that we are excited to promote, support and drive.

Sue Paish, CEO, Digital Technology Supercluster

We have gained great momentum since launching our COVID-19 Program on March 27th, receiving over 500 submissions, with 22 approved projects (to date) valued at $60M.

These projects are developing and implementing technologies that will expand our ability to detect and treat COVID-19 cases, prevent future outbreaks, support a safe return to community and work, and accelerate solutions to address mental health and wellness for all Canadians. The technologies our project teams are deploying address COVID-19, while also creating solutions and opportunities for future applications. Read our recent news release here.

Thank you for your continued commitment to delivering solutions that mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 and support Canada’s economic recovery. Learn about our COVID-19 projects here and submit new project ideas here.
