IP is a valuable asset that can provide a competitive advantage, generate revenue, and attract investment. However, developing an IP portfolio and strategically leveraging it can be complex and costly.

Open source software (OSS) is at the heart of AI and machine learning. In this rapidly evolving innovation landscape, understanding how to better manage rights and risks is essential and savvy organizations can adopt and implement strategies to understand the open source ecosystem and the legal intricacies with respect to open source in the field of AI and data licensing.

Who owns the work when it has been generated by AI? Can an AI system assign or license its IP rights? How can organizations responsibly use generative AI given IP considerations?

Intellectual property (IP) maturity, the stage at which an organization has developed a comprehensive, strategic approach to managing its intellectual property assets, impacts a company’s ability to innovate, compete, and achieve long-term success.

Industrial designs are a cornerstone in the innovation landscape, playing a pivotal role in shaping product differentiation, brand identity, and market competitiveness. However, their significance is often overshadowed by patents, which can lead to a misconception of their value and utility.

Leveraging data as a strategic asset is a defining characteristic across industries and organizations of all sizes and sectors. Failure to properly address the unique considerations related to data use and sharing from the outset can result in significant operational roadblocks, liability and reputational damage.

Establishing comprehensive policies for AI usage is essential for safeguarding organizational reputation, mitigating risks, and maximizing the benefits of AI technologies responsibly and sustainably.

With its rapid adoption, AI continues to permeate our lives, businesses and society at large, reshaping industries and redefining boundaries of innovation. While having incredible transformative potential, the adoption of AI by organizations can be messy and complex.

Generative AI is giving rise to intelligent systems that can generate creative content, mimic human-like behaviours, and revolutionize the way we interact with technology. However, it can also result in adverse impacts.

In the rapidly evolving innovation landscape, the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) has become not just a competitive advantage but a necessity for organizations seeking to thrive in the digital age. However, the journey towards effective AI adoption can be daunting and complex.

Whether you’re a dedicated academic researcher, passionate industry professional or ecosystem stakeholder eager to explore cross-sector collaborations, there are important considerations in facilitating these successful collaborations.

For innovative organizations, understanding the often complicated legal and financial aspects of IP is vitally important in effectively leveraging those assets for the growth and success of the organization.

Data is an increasingly valuable asset particularly given the increased adoption of generative AI. However, the rapid growth of generative AI and increased reliance on data, has raised growing concerns around cybersecurity.

With the increasing rise of data as a commercial asset, particularly within the health context, there are important practical considerations in relation to intellectual property as well as preserving confidentiality and achieving compliance with privacy and other regulatory requirements.

Intellectual property (IP) is an important value driver and putting an IP management strategy in place is critical to the successful development of a business. Organizations of all sizes, and most particularly SMEs, inevitably face unique challenges and opportunities in IP management and identifying, generating, and exploiting intellectual property can lead to sustainable (and in some cases significant) competitive advantages and avoidance of risks.

There are important and timely considerations in understanding how you can innovate using AI while making sure you’re going to be compliant within the regulatory landscape.

There are important and timely concerns related to the growing need to collect, license, and use data, which organizations need to be aware of.

With the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), there is increasingly a greater concern around the ethical use of AI requiring organizations to adopt an ethical framework to inform the development and responsible use of AI technologies. A failure to do so puts an organization at risk of reputational harm as well as potential exposure to liability. It is therefore vital that organizations start considering developing and adopting an AI code of ethics.

There are unique considerations related to licensing of data for machine learning which organizations of all sizes and sectors need to be aware of in the context of technological advancement and increased regulation. This webinar will explore these considerations and in particular will examine a model for licensing which was uniquely developed by presenters at this session.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming industries, and the regulatory landscape for AI technologies is rapidly evolving. Compliance with these regulatory frameworks requires the adoption of robust data management and governance practices, especially in the context of collaborative AI development. Additional IP protection and data sharing considerations must be considered as part of any AI development and commercialization effort.

With investors becoming more sophisticated in looking at IP assets and investing on the basis of those intangible assets, beyond a need for innovative companies to have an IP strategy and the ability to execute on that strategy, is a deeper understanding of IP, and in particular patents, how they fit into a competitive landscape and why it can sometimes be tricky to put a dollar figure on IP assets.

Earlier this year, the Government of Canada committed an additional $750 million in Budget 2022 towards the renewal of the Global Innovation Cluster program. The allocation of this new funding will be determined based on a competitive process, building on the successes of the current cluster model and expanding the opportunity internationally. Your insights and input are crucial to ensuring the next years of the program meet the needs of our ecosystem.

Having the foundation of a carefully executed trademark strategy can elevate your brand, prevent misuse by others, and become a valuable marketing tool in navigating the increasingly crowded world of trademarks. Whether you are intending to keep it local or have a view to global expansion, developing an understanding for what a trademark is, best practices for choosing and protecting your trademark, and what you can do to reduce your risk of inadvertently stepping on others’ toes, are vital for any organization.

Convergence of technologies and widespread application of digital infrastructure means that now, more than ever, start-ups and scale-ups need to understand their Freedom to Operate (FTO) and how they can develop business-differentiating IP strategies. This foundation is vital for organizations that want to scale and be competitive while working with limited resources and IP maturity.

Health data can save lives and keep BC and Canada competitive on the global stage — from genomics through developing AI solutions that cure disease. Data can help us diagnose and treat illness earlier and more effectively, accelerate preventative and precision medicine, unlock how environmental factors can determine health outcomes, and more.

As the frequency and sophistication of cyberattacks grows across Canada’s public and private sectors, now more than ever, organizations need to be vigilant and have a solid footing as it relates to data, cybersecurity, cyber insurance, and pre-breach strategies so they are prepared to deal with ransomware attacks. Irrespective of the size and type of the attack these events can and do have devastating financial, operational and reputational impacts on an organization and potentially its directors, employees, and shareholders.
