With the increasing rise of data as a commercial asset, particularly within the health context, there are important practical considerations in relation to intellectual property as well as preserving confidentiality and achieving compliance with privacy and other regulatory requirements.

Intellectual property (IP) is an important value driver and putting an IP management strategy in place is critical to the successful development of a business. Organizations of all sizes, and most particularly SMEs, inevitably face unique challenges and opportunities in IP management and identifying, generating, and exploiting intellectual property can lead to sustainable (and in some cases significant) competitive advantages and avoidance of risks.

With the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI), there is increasingly a greater concern around the ethical use of AI requiring organizations to adopt an ethical framework to inform the development and responsible use of AI technologies. A failure to do so puts an organization at risk of reputational harm as well as potential exposure to liability. It is therefore vital that organizations start considering developing and adopting an AI code of ethics.

There are unique considerations related to licensing of data for machine learning which organizations of all sizes and sectors need to be aware of in the context of technological advancement and increased regulation. This webinar will explore these considerations and in particular will examine a model for licensing which was uniquely developed by presenters at this session.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming industries, and the regulatory landscape for AI technologies is rapidly evolving. Compliance with these regulatory frameworks requires the adoption of robust data management and governance practices, especially in the context of collaborative AI development. Additional IP protection and data sharing considerations must be considered as part of any AI development and commercialization effort.

With investors becoming more sophisticated in looking at IP assets and investing on the basis of those intangible assets, beyond a need for innovative companies to have an IP strategy and the ability to execute on that strategy, is a deeper understanding of IP, and in particular patents, how they fit into a competitive landscape and why it can sometimes be tricky to put a dollar figure on IP assets.

Earlier this year, the Government of Canada committed an additional $750 million in Budget 2022 towards the renewal of the Global Innovation Cluster program. The allocation of this new funding will be determined based on a competitive process, building on the successes of the current cluster model and expanding the opportunity internationally.
